History - 1983 - Then...
ALTRES are a band from Dundee, Scotland who originally formed in 1983, playing mostly instrumental, improvised electronic music at a time when very few bands, if any, were making this type of music in the UK.
The ALTRES line-up back then was:
- Jeremy Bryning - synths
- Joseph Donnelly - synths
- Kevin L. Guthrie - synths, sequencer, drum-machine
- Brian Hutton - synths, sequencer, vocoder
- Mike Nelson - guitar
- Maurice Richardson - synths, sequencer, polysynth, drum-machine
The band's influences included: Tangerine Dream, Klaus Schulze, Philip Glass, Throbbing Gristle, Faust, the Doors, the Church and many others, but we didn't, and still don't, sound like any of them.
This original ALTRES line-up split in 1985, but in that brief period of time released a number of cassettes and performed at several live events as detailed elsewhere on this website.
2013 - Now...
"You thought you'd got rid of us, but we're back... and we're still here!"
After a short break lasting 17 years, ALTRES reformed in 2003. The current line-up is:
- Joseph Donnelly - synths
- Kevin L. Guthrie - synths
- Brian Hutton - guitar
We've also recorded a few tracks for a number of compilation CDs.
- "Earworm", a cover of Nick Drake's "Horn" and an interview with the band appears on INKEY$ 18.
- "Brain Flame" features on Analogy Vol 1, a compilation of tracks by members of the EMForum.nl electronic music forum, recorded using only analog instruments, available from Groove Unlimited.
- "Magiscule Beach" is featured on the Yesfans.com compilation CD "We Love When We Play", more details at the Yesfans.com Forum.
- A track called "Black Point" was released on the Awakenings 2006 Vol 2 double CD.
In 2007 we released the double CD-R "Tripping the Dark Fantastic".
In December 2012, the Archives album was released on vinyl by Dark Entries Records. This is a compilation of specially remastered recordings from the band's 1983-85 line-up.
We are currently working on our next release. Keep watching these pages for more information, or e-mail us and we'll put you on a mailing list, or something.
We are very keen to play live. Contact us if you'd like us to perform at an event. Anything interesting considered.
We're not Rock 'n' Roll or Heavy Metal. We don't play dance music, but that doesn't mean you can't dance. We play what we feel like playing. You don't have to listen to it if you don't like it.
We heal the sick.
